Top 5... Reasons to Join The Accolade


I thought about weighing in on the "5 Greatest Albums" debate going on between Cody and JJ, but then I thought that I already talk about that kind of thing enough on my personal blog (shameless plug) and really, I'm not any sort of a music/film buff. I collect them both like I collect candy and movie tickets, and I love them, but I don't have very complicated thoughts about them. I just like to enjoy them.



But, I wanted to write a Top 5 something, just to contribute.

So here it is.

TOP 5 REASONS TO 

JOIN THE ACCOLADE


1. THE STAFF IS AWESOME.

We're so awesome we don't even have a staff photo.

But really, it's important when you join extracurricular activities that you know you can have fun with the people who are a part of them. If you want to goof off and talk about things like music and movies while still getting journalism experience, then show up to an Accolade meeting.

Remember "Occupy the Fish Pond"? That was spearheaded by Accolade staff members. Don't remember it? Don't worry, we wrote an article on it. And a blog post.


2. AWESOME JOURNALISM EXPERIENCE. AND A LOT OF IT.

If you are a writer wanting to learn about journalism and get some experience, then we're the place for you. Because of our unique online format, we don't need to pick and choose between what articles we can publish. We're pretty lenient when it comes to topic, as well.

We want you to write, and write a lot (1-2 articles per week, when you can) but we also want you to write about things that are interesting to you. I was on the Service Council last year, so I wrote an article on that. I was in Acting I with Prof. Stoddard, so I interviewed him about the spring play. If you want to write about sports, we need you. Politics? We need you. The newest fish pond debacle? We want that article.

And guess what? We'll publish it, too.


3. DON'T WORRY, WE'LL HELP YOU EDIT.

We have plenty of editors who will help you with grammar, spelling, and content. In fact, it has to go through us in order to be published on the site.

But we won't edit out your voice. If you have something to say and you're not sure if many people will agree with you, we won't tell you to quit. We have opinion articles for a reason. We believe in the freedom of speech.

Unless, you know, you're writing about how the school should be bombed or something crazy like that. Don't.

Please don't do that.


4. WE ARE DEDICATED TO THE TRUTH.

We verify our facts. We are journalists, not politicians.
ooooh burn

The truth is important. You won't see an article on the Accolade that isn't 100% factual. And if you do? Call us out on it. Because we are dedicated to presenting the facts, even if it means admitting we were wrong. We will always try to correct our mistakes as immediately as possible.

If you're dedicated to truth and don't mind writing, the Accolade is for you.


5. YOU CAN WRITE ON &ETC WHENEVER YOU WANT.

That's right.

Right here, right now, baby.

All of the Accolade staff has access to &etc, and seeing as it's a blog, we're a lot less strict on choice of topic (if we can be considered strict in the first place). We want &etc to be fun. We want it to be a place where you can share your thoughts on music, art, literature, dining hall food, the dating scene, how hard it is to find a parking spot on the hill after 9am. Sometimes, we want to be ridiculous. Sometimes, we give our staff topics (see: hipsters) and let them loose. 

We're awesome, remember? 


I forgot to mention, we like photographers too. Are you a photographer? Do you like going to school functions or wish you had something pushing you to go to more?
